7 STEPS TO YOUR NEW ROOF
Step One: Make the Decision
Making the decision to replace your roof is the first step. We say the best time to get a new roof is always up to the customer but we can make professional recommendations based on the age of your roofing system, the condition, and expected lifetime of your existing roofing system!

Step Two: Choose Your Roofing Materials

The second step is choosing the right materials to be used. Replacing existing materials with more of the same is not necessarily the best choice, particularly if the exterior of your home has changed!
GAF Architectural Shingles (Long-Term Option with Greater Aesthetic Curb Appeal!) 10 Year Labor Warranty
GAF, “North America’s Largest Roofing Manufacturer!™” offers Timberline Architectural shingles and Designer Choice shingles that come with a Lifetime Ltd. Warranty! GAF Advanced Protection™ shingles are the #1 selling brand of shingles in North America. These shingles will protect and beautify your home. They will provide you with the value and performance you need when considering a long term investment into your home.
GAF 3-Tab Asphalt Shingles (Economical Option. Still looks great!) 6 Year Labor Warranty
GAF, “North America’s Largest Roofing Manufacturer!™” also offers Marquis WeatherMax® 3-Tab shingles (30 year ltd. warranty) and Royal Sovereign® 3-Tab shingles (25 year ltd. warranty) that both feature a dimensional appearance. A wide range of colors and depth enhance the desired look of real wood shakes with a Class “A” fire rating with warranties that range between 25 and 30 years. “Over 10 billion Royal Sovereign® Shingles have been installed in North America – enough to circle the Earth 12 times if they were laid end to end.”
Wood Shakes and Shingles
Cedar shakes and shingles are built to withstand the elements and this time tested natural product will enhance the appearance of your home or building. Fire treated shakes and shingles provide excellent fire protection and meet the rigorous testing standards for Class “A, B or C” fire resistance and weathering as set by the Uniform Building Code and National Fire Protection Association.
Single Ply Systems (Alternative Roofing Material Option)
Single layer roofing material is a very clean process without flaming torches, smoking kettles and strong odors. The advantages of using this system are:
- PVC and TPO membranes reinforced with polyester scrim are used more often because of their “Cool Roof” properties and superior seam strength
- EDPM rubber is also used as a long term solution with unmatched durability
- Low maintenance costs
- Excellent resistance to environmental stresses including ozone and UV exposure, extreme weather conditions, chemicals and fire
- Reflective surface color reduces energy costs
Step 3: Choose a Color
Shingle color is often one of the most important decisions for homeowners when deciding on the right roof for their home. Select the shingle type you like best and enter your ZIP code to view available colors that we can install on your home:
GAF Timberline Series Colors
Timberline HD® (Our Most Popular Option! Best mix of affordability and beauty)
Timberline Ultra HD® (Ultra-Dimensional Head Turners. We typically might recommend for water-front homes)
Timberline® Cool Series (Reflects sunlight! Energy Savings and Tax Rebates!)
Timberline® ArmorShield™ II (Potential Home-Owners Insurance Savings. Consult your agent)
3-Tab GAF Shingle Colors

Step 4: Choose a Professional Roofing Contractor

The Fourth Step is to choose a reputable and professional roofing contractor. We are a great roofing company and would love to earn your business. If you haven’t, please view our profile page to learn more about Gilpin Roofing & Siding, Inc, Virginia Beach roofing company.
Step 5: Choose a Roofing System
Not every new roof needs every available roofing component to create a bullet-proof roofing system. Once you’ve chosen your shingle type, shingle color, and a company you trust to install your roof, we can discuss your options on what it will take to create a brilliant roofing system for your home.
Roof Deck Protection: due to the advanced quality of workmanship and products we use we will recommend that you either use 15 lb. felt paper, 30 lb. felt paper, or an alternative GAF solution.
Leak Barrier: because it is common that old roofs fail at the rakes and eves, we typically install WeatherWatch® leak barrier on all rakes and eves to provide extra protection for the more vulnerable areas of your roofing system.
Starter Strip Shingles: Pro-Start® pre-cut starter strip shingles help prevent shingle blow-offs because of their factory-applied adhesive strips. They are a great alternative to what many other roofing contractors do… Cut a shingle in half and nail it down for the starter shingle.
Cobra Attic Ventilation: Cobra® Ridge Vent 3™ helps remove excess heat and moisture from your attic that can raise your energy bills, cause premature peeling of interior paint and wallpaper, and even affect your health. This is a superior attic ventilation product! We will let you know if we recommend this product depending on the existing accessories on your roof currently.
Ridge Cap Shingles: the Ridge Cap Shingles that we install provide extra beauty and value to your home while guarding against leaks at the hips and ridges.

Step 6: Let Us Know When You Want Your New Roof Installed

We are flexible with our scheduling. Due to our busy schedule and seasonality, we try our absolute best to optimize our roof installation scheduling system to accommodate your scheduling requests.
All roofs that we schedule to install are subject to change depending on the weather but we still always try our best to work in a timeframe that suits you.
Step 7: Stop Worrying About Your Old Roof and Enjoy Your Beautiful Home
